Collection: red coral jewelry

Red coral jewelry had been worn for centuries before it became known in the Netherlands as a popular part of regional jewelry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In West Friesland, Volendam and Zeeland, necklaces made of multiple strands of red coral were worn, which were set with large gold clasps. The bigger the gold locks, the richer the family was. There were necklaces of 2 to three strands of red coral with large beads in the shape of 'barrels' or 'cheeses'. In Zeeland this could also be five or six strands of smaller sized beads.

Of course, red coral can not be missing from my collection of Dutch button jewelry. I like to use them in combination with pearls, silver and gold.
